SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

SEPTEMBER 2021

WELCOME

Africa’s Eden has it's heart in The Victoria Falls; it is the wildlife estate shared between Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Adrenaline & Adventure

Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable Tourism is the only way forward. It is up to us to protect the people and environment we use to profit through tourism. This newsletter focuses on the efforts of the Africa's Eden Members to provide incredible experiences for their guests while being mindful of economic, social and environmental issues.

Chobe Marina Lodge Energy & Conservation

When you choose Chobe Marina Lodge as your go-to destination, you get the chance to step away from it all and experience the authenticity that is Africa in all it's spendour. So much so that everything from our décor to to our amenities to our accommodation echos nature, with sustainbility as one of our utmost priorities.

Sustainability & Design;

Africa is a bountiful and vibrant nation, a place we are honored to call home. And when it comes to preserving its environment, we stand by the notion that the simplest actions we can make a big difference.

Local Bespoke Design;

Every space has been designed to bring the wild spirit of the Chobe River to life. And with monkeys, mongoose, warthogs and bush buck raoming around the lodge contentedly, your African experience is sure to be complete.

Energy & Conservation;

We are committed to preserving our world's wildlife populations and wilderness areas. Our lodge uses energy-saving resources; this includes our solar geysers, our efforts to reduce single-use plastic, and the installation of energy efficient lighting.

Being Kind to the Soil;

We work with nature without disrupting her ecosystem by making sure every step in our food production process is a concious one. We make use of local products and adjust our menus according to seasonal harvests.

Pure Africa, deeply anchored in Sustainable Practices

Based in Victoria Falls, Pure Africa has its heart in the right place with an unwavering commitment to sustainability, the environment, and surrounding communities.

Placing great emphasis on reducing their carbon footprint and treading gently on the land – and water, Pure Africa makes use of solar energy on their Zambezi Explorer and Zambezi Reflections cruisers. Greatly committed to waste reduction, their wastewater treatment plant means that no black water runs into the river – something that is extremely important.

They practice waste separation and recycling, work largely with glassware and are saying no to single-use plastic now that their water purification system is up and running. As strong believers in supporting local, Pure Africa sources most of their fresh ingredients from within the Zambezi Valley, while working actively towards reducing food waste.

Their ongoing refurbishments are carried out with the support of the local community, examples of these being the Zambezi Explorer’s hand-woven Ndebele patterned chairs and hand-sewn embroidered cushion covers, all created in collaboration with Greenline Africa, a local NGO.

Working with Victoria Falls Recycling, their drinking glasses used for water, beer and cocktails onboard their cruises are fashioned from used and repurposed wine bottles, making them eco-friendly and incredibly chic looking too.

Sustainable practices are at the core of all things Pure Africa and applied to the array of River Cruises offered onboard their stylish fleet of boats, at the Pure Africa Waterfront, The Eatery, and stunning Weddings, Events & Incentives that they host. Reaffirming that doing the right thing by the environment does not mean a compromise on quality – but quite the opposite.

As an owner-run tourism operator constantly striving to be at the forefront of responsible travel, Pure Africa makes impact tangible with a portion of its revenue going to the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU) and Greenline Africa. Booking with them, means you’re doing right by the surroundings.

Solar Power at Pioneers, Victoria Falls

When you walk through the gates of Pioneers, Victoria Falls it is a bit like you have stepped right onto a copy of “The Secret Garden”. From outside the boundary wall, it is difficult to imagine what lies beyond the big wall. As you enter through the big gates you are greeted with huge open spaces, beautiful gardens, and a variety of trees that would be every adventurous child’s dream, creating a truly magical moment.

The lodge might be new, but the trees that stand here are old and probably have many stories to tell - if they could talk. Realising the importance of these trees, we designed the lodge in such a way that we could keep as many of them on the property when we did the building. We only ended up having to cut down nine trees, but we made up for that by planting 109 trees in various places and over 3000 plants on the property. We felt this was a good start in our vision in playing our part towards more sustainable tourism.

Given that Victoria Falls is known for its vast blue skies and glowing warm sunshine, we decided that it was only fitting to adopt solar power as a method to generate most of the power we need to run the lodge. We are incredibly proud of our solar system. Solar panels are placed strategically all around the lodge, but they can only be seen if pointed out. They feed into a room that looks like it wouldn’t be out of place at an international space station. And this is where the magic takes place – the sunshine powering the lodge.  All of our hot water in the rooms is from solar geysers too. We do have back up power options in place to ensure uninterrupted power supply for those occasional cloudy days.

We have also tried to get away from single use plastic to a certain degree – with the goal to move away from it completely in the near future. Filtered water is placed in flasks in all the rooms, and all of our table water is filtered water served in reusable glass bottles. It is just a small step but many small steps make a big difference to the environment.

We cannot wait to welcome you at Pioneers, Victoria Falls.

Shinde Camp is 100% Solar Powered

With the growing worldwide requirement for “Green Safari”, Ker & Downey Botswana have strived to bring this closer to our shores, with the most recent re-build of Shinde.

Adding to our growing number of 100% solar converted camps, Shinde will join Kanana with the highest certification of Eco-Tourism.

Our activities are done in great consideration of leaving a low carbon footprint on our surrounding. This includes fishing on a catch and release basis in our Okavango Delta premises.

Shinde is situated on a private concession which allows guided walks, Mokoro excursions and night drives in addition to game drives and motorboat trips.
Rebuilt in 2020, retaining the authentic classic safari style, the new tents and main area provide a luxury experience with a touch of historical charm.

The décor can be described as having the best of nature within an authentic safari design–still with the understated, friendly and intimate Ker & Downey Botswana feel”. Elegant, Classic, Opulent ‘Out of Africa’. A ‘worldly’ sophisticated safari experience.

The Zambezi Queen Collection Community Initiatives

At the Zambezi Queen Collection we care just as much for our beautiful environment as we do for our guests. From the mighty waters of the Chobe River itself and the majestic wildlife that quench their thirst along its banks, to the local communities that live here, we are involved in numerous initiatives to conserve, uplift and protect this beautiful landscape we call home.

For the love of water

Our elegant Zambezi Queen has been eco-engineered to leave no more than ripples in its wake. Instead of a conventional propeller system, it uses a sophisticated water jet system that doesn’t disrupt the delicate balance of the river bed below. A solar-heating system provides hot water, while all sinks and showers have water-saving features. The ship also features a state-of-the-art water purification plant to ensure that our taps, showers and plunge pools flow with clean, clear water. All cleaning products used on board our houseboats are biodegradable and won’t harm wildlife in any way. Fuel-efficient and low-emission generators are used during daylight hours, after which the houseboats switch to battery power at night.

In an even greater effort to save this most precious resource, we’ve introduced a grey water recycling system that collects used water from all of our houseboats and treats it using a highly-effective five-stage filtration process. This purified water is then used to irrigate the vegetable gardens that we manage in local communities. Our guests are reaping the benefits from the crops produced in our very own vegetable garden at Ichingo Chobe River Lodge.

For the love of wildlife

The Kasai Channel is located right in the middle of the floodplains, and is therefore a very important breeding ground for the many species of fish native to this stretch of river. Unfortunately, the illegal use of drag nets by commercial fishermen has seen the fish population decline dramatically since 2009. In an effort to help create a safer environment for the fish to breed, this area is now being monitored and patrolled for illegal netting. Ichingo Chobe River Lodge has also implemented a catch-and-release policy to protect our precious wildlife even further. We’re very excited to observe that over the past 15 months the fish population has recovered significantly, providing spectacular and environmentally responsible opportunities for game fishing to our guests.

For the love of people

Our people and the communities that they come from are like family to us. That’s why we’re involved in a large number of educational, employment and development initiatives designed to uplift and support the people we share this beautiful landscape with. From sponsoring school uniforms and stationery, providing clean water, donating food and supporting local commerce to making monthly contributions to various conservancies, salaries for school teachers and clinics, amongst numerous others, we are committed to making a lasting and positive impact. All of our staff members are employed from the local communities and we invest in training and mentorship to improve their lives and help them fulfill their full potential.

Bushtracks Highlights Green Compliant Travel Choices

Travellers today are aware that the choices they make can directly have positive (or negative) impacts on conservation and communities. In Africa in particular, tourism plays a valuable role in sustainability, development and livelihoods. Tourism provides visitors with a wonderful chance to invest in Africa's diverse local communities, promote conservation programs, and create jobs for women and youth.

With this in mind, Bushtracks' green-compliant lodging options are now highlighted on our website to help travellers choose sustainable options. We have gone through our accommodation selection and highlighted those that meet with the Bushtracks principles for sustainable travel. These are organisations we are particularly proud to support and that integrate sustainable travel into their ethos. The goal of the program is to make individuals more conscious of what their travel supports beyond what is immediately visible.

When seeing our green compliant icon under a lodging choice, you can then click for further information on how the particular lodging supports each of three meaningful and symbiotic pillars: conservation, community, and the environment. Under each, there are specific details on exactly how the camp you have selected provides support, so that you can be confident in your choice.

We hope this will assist our clients in appreciating the positive change their journey has on the environment and people of the area they travel to. Every time a guest visits one of these camps, they also support them in their efforts to provide a real and lasting result.

Sustainability Initiatives at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge Estate

Zimbabwean hospitality group Africa Albida Tourism, which operates Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate, has a proud track record of supporting conservation and community initiatives, but being funded through tourism many of these projects have been hard hit during the pandemic.

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate’s key project is the protection of wildlife through the co-establishment and support of the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU), and it also operates the Vulture Culture Experience, a daily supplementary feeding program to aid the survival of these remarkable, but endangered birds.

Other initiatives include the Victoria Falls Recycling project, Victoria Falls Clean Up campaigns, National Tree Planting Day, donating goods to local schools, clinics, orphanages and old age homes and Pack for a Purpose, where guests are encouraged to bring supplies for schools and clinics.
The hospitality group also introduced the environmentally friendly Natura water system to eliminate plastic water bottles, as part of its goal to eradicate all single use plastic on the estate.

Despite the difficult times over the past 18 months with few guests visiting the destination due the Covid-19 pandemic, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge estate has continued to support almost all of the above projects, albeit often at a reduced level.

African Sun Hotels & Resorts Sustainability Initiatives

At African Sun (‘the company”) we are committed to managing our environmental footprint while providing the best in-class hospitality and leisure experience to our customers. Sustainable and responsible tourism programs are necessary more than ever to keep our natural, cultural and social environment of people and places intact. It is our commitment to join hands and work diligently with all stakeholders in projects and programs that promote sustainable tourism so that together we can achieve green destination status for Zimbabwe.

Global collaboration
The Group has identified and adopted 7 (seven) United Nations Global Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), and is fully committed to adhering to these. These have been termed the 7 Rays in line with the seven rays of the sun on the African Sun Logo. These SDG goals ties in well with our three key sustainability pillars of environment, community and colleagues. For each selected SDG, the group has set deliverables and these are being implemented, tracked, monitored and reviewed over time.

7 Rays of the Sun – African Sun Hotels Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out a series of global ambitions to end Poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030. Whilst recognizing the importance of all the SDGs, we believe that African Sun Limited, using its power of scale, can make the biggest contribution through the implementation of seven rays of the sun (7 SDGs). The seven SDGs form the key pillars of the company’s approach to sustainability.

The following are activities done so far this year (2021) under each SDG.

No Poverty
Elephant Hills Resort and Conference Centre donated to Rose of Sharon Welfare organization. The donation comprised linen, towels and bed sheets.
Up cycling project has seen 250 hospital gowns made by The Victoria Falls Hotel donated to Victoria Falls hospital. These gowns are made from old and out of use bed sheets with fabric still in good condition. Towels have been made into flower pots in a pilot project that will empower youth in Victoria Falls through making these commercially.

Zero Hunger
The Monomotapa hotel hosted a luncheon to feed Harare street kids as well as made donations to Amaruran Home, All Souls and Shammah Children’s Home. The hotel also provided garden implements for Harare Gardens Park and mower spares for the Harare City Council.

Good Health
The Kingdom at Victoria Falls adopted the Post Natal ward at Chinotimba Hospital to ensure that the Hospital is better equipped to service patients so that in-house mothers and new babies are taken good care of. To-date since the adoption of the ward, there has been approximately 2 500 live births.

Great Zimbabwe Hotel continues to support Nemamwa Clinic with linen and counselling sessions to HIV and AIDs infected children.

Quality Education

In its quest to promote quality education, African Sun Limited donated Kitchen equipment to Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) for use by Tourism and Hospitality students during their practical lessons.

In order to ensure lifelong educational opportunities, Great Zimbabwe Hotel and Elephant Hills Resort and Conference Centre continue to support students at Nemamwa and Chinotimba Primary Schools with fees, uniforms and stationery.

Gender Equality
The company has a deliberate policy which seeks to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. ASL strongly believes that equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace are vital for the success of the company, now and the future.

Equitably, the company strives for fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement of all staff, at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.
In the same vein, we also celebrate diversity at the workplace. Our recruitment policy does not discriminate against creed, colour, race, religion or ethnicity and our Code of Conduct makes it an offence to discriminate. Our recruitment policies are based solely experience and merit.

Clean Water and Sanitation
Under the green programs, the group implements and oversees programs that run throughout the year. These programs have resulted in hotels saving water, reducing waste and being energy efficient in and for the benefit of the surrounding environment.

Four hotels, namely The Victoria Falls Hotel, The Kingdom At Victoria Falls, Holiday Inn Harare and Monomotapa Hotel have successfully implemented Water purification projects which have seen these hotels supplying all the in-house guests with internally purified water which is safe and clean for consumption, thus doing away with plastic water bottles in the process.

Life on Land
The Kingdom at Victoria Falls, Elephant Hills Resort and Conference Centre, and The Victoria Falls Hotel make monthly contribution to the Victoria Falls Anti - Poaching Unit (VFAPU). The Victoria Falls Anti- Poaching Unit is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of our local wildlife and natural resources.

All Hotels participate in monthly clean up campaigns as way of preserving the environment.

The Art of SLOW Fashion

In Zambia, if you say that you’re wayawaya-ing, it means that you are going slowly, slowly. It’s a bit like the story of the tortoise and the hare; you’ll get there in the end but in your own good time. The tortoise knew that it was better to move with purpose, determination and mindfulness rather than simply finishing by any means possible.

It is with this same ethos that WAYAWAYA became a social enterprise in Livingstone, Zambia. Eight female employees that previously did not complete formal education were trained through the Zambian Artisan Association for Women. They are now expert leather workers with sustainable employment through WAYAWAYA making luxury handbags and corporate gifting options.

At its core, the vision has always been to offer skills development that uplifts women through prosperous livelihoods. If you visit their workshop, you’ll still find the women laughing and waywaya-ing, but it is with a huge smile and a sense of pride that their artistry is shipped around the world with agents in Norway, America, South Africa and more. Check out their products here or look at their Youtube channel

If you have a group coming to Livingstone, consider allocating time for the Artisan Tour offered by Bushtracks Africa that stops in at the WAYAWAYA workshop. You can also contact [email protected] to discuss embossed gifting options with an uplifting story that your clients are sure to remember.
