1. TRAIL TALK

Life: I'm going to send you some things.
(Virus, lockdowns, societal fragmentation, riots, floods, and more...)

Trail community: Sure. Could we also have more trail runs than ever before?

Life: Oh, OK.

It's quite remarkable that the next month alone has 54 trail running events.

2. YOUR ADVENTURES

Your photos.
Check out this week's Facebook post and share your own favourite pic from the weekend or during the week.

Some of your adventures of the past fortnight included:

  • Adele Immelman (above) climbed/hike/ran Groenberg in Wellington. "I had some easter eggs at the top," she said.

  • Kent Venish (pic below) got bogged in swampy jungles at Rainbows Trail in Gonubie, Eastern Cape, last Sunday.

  • Greg Levin (final pic) enjoyed Saturday and Sunday trail runs at Karkloof. "The rivers and waterfalls were flowing nicely. Food for the soul," he enthused.

Thanks to First Ascent for sponsoring this week's Trail Trophies. Check out their X-Trail Grid 1/4 Zip Fleece Top now available in two new colours.

3. GEAR

First Ascent X-Trail Grid 1/4 Zip Fleece Top

Notice what the temperature's been doing in the mornings? It's time to find your winter wear, and if you haven't updated your base/mid-layer for a while, First Ascent has a high quality option for you, available in two new colours.

The X-Trail Grid 1/4 Zip Fleece Top (available in Men's/Women versions) is made from ThermaPro fleece, which offers you all of the warmth without the bulk of traditional fleece, as well as a modern look with a solid finish. The thermally efficient grid design on the inside keeps you warm and toasty, while allowing moisture to escape.

It folds into its inner chest pocket for space-saving stowage in your running pack or luggage. The new colours: Berry Blush (Ladies) and Kingfisher Dive (Men).

5. NEWS

Travis Warwick-Oliver had a serious motorbike accident in 2020, which severely damage his right foot. It was followed by multiple surgeries to save it, but the damage was too severe. He opted for an amputation below the knee, but this didn't quell his need for adventure. He's since been running ultra-distance events up to 80km.

That's all changing this weekend. Travis is doubling up and tackling his first 100 miler, at what is widely agreed is the toughest 100 in SA, the Ultra-Trail Drakensberg. He arrived at registration at Premier Resort Sani Pass yesterday with a new prosthetic, which he'd only just got, and hadn’t even run with yet!

All the best to Travis and all other UTD runners. The 100 miler started at 10am today, and the rest begin tomorrow.

Trailrunning Art is an Instagram account that predominantly features trail athletes from around the world (and trail hounds too). Cool to see SA runners being featured.

Mushrooms and you
Do mushrooms have a compound so important for health it should be considered a vitamin?
